Respite Program Database

The Respite Program Database is a database of qualified, experienced respite workers and families/individuals who are seeking support. Many respite workers on our database are students or recent graduates who join to gain valuable work experience. Respite workers vary in experience, skill sets, and availability, and should not be considered trained therapists. Our database is updated regularly as we recruit new respite workers and families/individuals to find successful matches.

Respite workers are not employees of the Respite Program Database, or Cape Breton Community Respite. Families/individuals accessing the database contract the Respite worker directly. All Respite workers have submitted an application outlining their experience, interests and availability, as well as a resume which are reviewed during a personal interview. Each respite worker also has a Police Reference Check conducted, 3 references checked and has attended an orientation session to the Respite Program Database.

The Respite Program Database does not make referrals of respite workers but rather facilitates connections between families and respite workers based on families/individuals needs and workers’ availability and skills. The family/individual independently hires the worker. It is important to understand that a respite worker is not an employee of the Respite Program Database, or Cape Breton Community Respite. They are contracted as an independent service provider of the family/individual. It is up to the family/individual to select, interview and hire the worker.

Our service works best when our information about families and also workers is current. Please contact a Respite Coordinator as soon as:

•    you hire a worker or are hired
•    your family/individual needs change and you temporarily do NOT require a worker
•    your schedule changes that you can temporarily NOT take any contracts with families/individuals
•    you wish to be removed from the database permanently. assists families of individuals with disabilities to connect with respite options both in and out of home through a Family Registry and a Worker Registry
