The Respite Learning Portal is devoted to people who are interested in learning more about the world of respite and those already providing respite support who want to access more training, information, and to share ideas and resources. 

The Respite Learning Portal is known for its two key On-line courses, Respite Training Certificate and Respite Care for People with Autism Certificate.

Visit the fresh, new, interactive Respite Learning Portal. Check out the online courses, resources and growing list of free webinars. Trade your stories and ideas and engage in a dialogue with other caregivers. Over 3,000 Respite Workers have now completed the Online Respite Services Training Certificate. Respite Services Training Certificate Course

The Respite Services Training Certificate can be used by a range of people. It was designed as a self-paced online course to prepare individuals to work in respite support situations and also provides a basic level of training for current respite workers. Those who are already working in the field may find it useful to take the course to explore areas they are less familiar with ensure they have a full understanding of all the skills required.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Describe the role of a respite support provider
  • Support a person in a “meaningful life”
  • Deploy active listening skills for effective communication
  • Define clear boundaries of what should and should not be expected of a respite support provider
  • Create a positive environment to handle challenging respite support situations
  • Implement good health and safety practices in respite support situations
  • Recognize signs of abuse and know the proper procedures to follow in such cases
  • Properly bring closure to a respite support relationship

Respite Care for People with Autism

This course has been designed to provide training for people who are providing "hands on" respite care to individuals who have autism. In this self-paced online course you will learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and understand how people with ASD experience the world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role of a respite support provider
  • Identify qualities that families look for in a respite provider
  • Define ASD and explain why it is called a spectrum disorder
  • Give examples of communication challenges in ASD
  • Describe several techniques to encourage social interaction skills
  • Create meaningful activities for a person with ASD
  • Ways to reduce anxiety in a person with ASD
  • Explain the concept of predictable function
  • Develop strategies for positive and enriching respite care

Respite Workers, Autism and Your Child : A Parent's Module

It can be challenging to have someone else come into your home on a regular basis and care for your child. This free online resource was designed to assist you in searching out a respite worker that is a good fit with your family, and compiling information they need to best support your child and how you can help provide training.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the unique characteristics of your child to a respite care provider
  • Prepare a binder and written profile of how ASD affects your child
  • Create an interview form with questions for a respite care provider
  • Describe methods of ongoing communication with a respite worker
  • Identify safety tips
  • Outline methods to keep the respite care relationship going

The Respite Learning Portal has been successfully launched by SafeGuards Training.

SafeGuards Training is a unique training program designed to meet the highly specialized training needs of staff serving children, youth, adults and families in Ontario. It is a joint training project of five provincial associations in the children´s services sector that began in 1995.
