What is respite care?
Respite care is a family support service that provides temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands involved in caring for a family member with a developmental and/or physical disability. Respite creates greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities while allowing caregivers time for themselves.

HOW TO ACCESS RESPITE SERVICES
There are three primary agencies in Windsor and Essex County that provide respite services for families.  The agencies receive funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services or the Ministry of Community and Social Services to provide these services for families.  Some of the agencies provide services according to the age of the person who has the disability.

  • Family Respite Services (FRS) provides in home respite, assistance with Special Services at Home, ACSD, summer support and Enhanced Respite for families living in Windsor and Essex County. 
  • FRS also provides out of home respite (associate family/host family) for families living in Windsor and Essex County
  • FRS provides out of home respite in staffed respite homes for families who live in the City of Windsor

  • Community Living Essex (CLE) provides out of home respite in staffed respite homes for families who live outside of the City of Windsor in Essex County.
  • Community Living Essex also provides assistance with summer support for families living outside of Windsor in Essex County.
  • Community Living Essex also provides assistance with administering Special Services at Home
